The Revolutionary Sixties

Hi all,

I hope everyone is well!

To start my fashion research in to the sixties I feel a good place to start is finding out about the sixties and what it was all about. So here’s some quick and interesting facts.

It was a revolutionary time for the younger generation, full of freedom to do what they wanted when they wanted. Parents wanted their children to have fun and not suffer as they did through world war 2.

The place to be was London were anything was made possible for the youth, in fact the 60s had one of the highest population of youths living in London.

One of the biggest changes of the decade was the music! New bands like The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones had a new sound to hear and new messages with in the lyrics that stood for their beliefs against authority.

60s really started seeing the influences of feminism! As more jobs became available, allowing them to financially support themselves leading to more freedom.

Drugs became a big part of the 60s especially for youths looking for something different and fun. LSD was the most popular making people feel happy, optimistic and giving them hallucinations. which brought on the ‘hippie’ movement. This movement brought a new look to art, by using vibrant colours and patterns.

Pirate radio stations were very popular as they gave an alternative to old fashioned BBC radio stations. – to understand more about pirate radio stations watch “the boat that rocked” this is one of my favourite films set in the 60s and explains their story.

Thats all for this blog post I hope it gave you a quick insight In to the sixties, if you want to find out more theirs a great documentary on Netflix called ‘My generation’ with Sir Micheal Caine talking about his experience of the sixties. My next post I will start looking in to the fashion of the sixties, so join me next Saturday!

All the best,

FD x
